RE: Best ferry to take TC and family - Washington to Victoria?

It all depends on where you are. I like the WA state ferry we took from the island back to Ancortes WA, the part of that trip that sucked was the drive south through Seattle. The Ferry from Port Angles to Victoria BC was great at both ends. The Northern one, that I'm not remembering, to mainland BC was good also. IMO they are all 6 or half dozen.

RE: Oregon Hwys 140 to 97 using back roads

when are you going to go on this trip? I too am planing to use 31 to Lakeview in September. According to my mapping software the 31 route has steep grades and is 217 miles. The southern route, 140 to Sprague river and the Chiloquin hwy is 208 miles and also has a steep grade or two.

RE: your thoughts on a wing ?

Your choice. I have an Ultra-Fab fiberglass wing and will not tow without it. I have had it on 4 different trucks. I repaint it every time I get a new truck (since 1995) snipI too have an Ultra-fab. Are you saying you notice an mpg difference? I don't really see one.

RE: your thoughts on a wing ?

I have been told that the frontal area is the same so there is no gain in mpg. I might have that wrong, I'm sure an engineer or want-to-be will correct me. There is a huge difference in stability when you meet a semi at hwy speed on a two lane road. They are good in a cross wind also.

RE: moab to oregon coast best route

Well... you got a whole can of worms here. j/k, I love this area I suspect you know, 140 across northern NV and southern OR is a desert, there are few & far between services. There is no cell service or corners for a 7-11, your preparation and attention is needed. http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s38/jefff929/2006-September/5d10.jpg height=175 width=225 From K. Falls I'd go across to I5 and up to hwy 42 to Bandon or the Coos Bay area. Cape Argo if you're into sightseeing. To Baker City: I'd go up 101 to hwy 126 and take it all the way to hwy 20, then hwy 20 to Ontario. Again long stretches with no services. Once you leave Bend in Central Oregon, Eastern Oregon in that area has few services. If this isn't what you want, there is I5 -> I205 -> I84.

RE: silverado diesel VS new hybrid

Don't know about the hybrids... A guy I camp with had a regular chev gasser and when hooked to the 5er he was totally unhappy with the towing MPG. He went to a Diesel and is much happier as it is nearly 1/2 (6-8mpg vs. 10-12) better towing mpg. around town it is a toss up as to the better mpg. What will your primary use be? Are you able to handle the temporary cost of gas (lower MPG) to haul your RV from place to place vs. unloaded cruising mpg. As another poster said, on a long trip with batteries depleted and you get to the big hill in a head wind will a hybrid get the job done? If you are concerned with saving the planet, does my Diesel burning B100 have a lower carbon footprint? B80, B50, B20?

RE: Integrated alarm clock, smoke detector and CO alarm

I'm assuming the product life expectancy is ten years. Multiple mounting options. Most RVs are compact and your cooking space is close. How many of us use the smoke detector to indicate dinner is ready? counter space is limited, wall mounting (Velcro) might be an option. What power source will you use? In our RV the 120v sockets are not placed well & some are used or over used. The 12v plugs are few and far between, nice for boondocking use. Batteries can be a pain to recharge or replace on appliances, and something that you are gonna bet your life on HAS to work. Is dividing the power in the device an option? Say, a ten year lithium battery for the detector portion that switches when you hook it to another power source (battery, commercial or 12v) What basic size or shape are you shooting for? Smaller is better in most cases; except for those over 40 who can't see as well, and need bigger buttons (I have fat fingers), and decent size numbers on the face. Ultimate cost is also a consideration, but I might pay a little more for a multifunction device that replaces two or more other devices and is something that doesn't add to my clutter.

RE: Quartzville Dr / Green Peter Lake (Western Oregon)

I need to let my brother know this, he isn't gonna be happy. how far up did you go? He is usually up about 20 miles or so from the hwy.

RE: Why did Ford do that?

between 2000 and 2001 Dodge raised the body 2" for ???, who knows. I used to like the fact you could get a F150,250... and not have to get a step ladder to get out and in. I have to agree with your comment about needing to be bigger badder... than brand D or C. In light of what is needed for towing fuel economy it seems to me if someone were to build a capable 4x4 that wasn't in the clouds there might be one or two buyers out there interested in buying, think aerodynamics.

RE: TV oil change while on the road

If you are a TDR member find a member on the travel guide and ask what they use or where they would go. You might also ask this same question on any of the many diesel forums like diesel bombers, DTR, TDR, cummins forum. I'm sure you will get help on the right place to go local at your destination.

RE: Carbon Footprint of traveling by TC

Funny, this comprehensive tool allows no changes to the formula for bio fuels. Is my big gas hogging pickup better on the environment than a hybrid that needs nasty batteries recycled every 7 years? Maybe they are too ashamed of the facts to allow modifications. I bet my carbon footprint is way lower than recognized! EDIT: By the way it is spellet BioDiesel.

RE: Economy,,,,,,,Do you really feel the "sky falling"

DutchmenSport, funny you should mention jobs going overseas. Over two years ago at Christmas time I (and others I worked with) got outsourced to Asia. The whole media hype thing is blown out of proportion and I'm not buying what they are selling. Having the perspective of being out of a job for over 2 years undergoing reprograming, I'm not negative about current events. I almost thought I was too old for retraining but this is a great opportunity for me to follow my heart and do something I want to do. My only limit is when the Mrs retires I am expected to join her. Life is too short for wasted energy, take it easy, maybe go camping :B

RE: Roads from the 101 to the 5 in Central Oregon

It isn't called "the 5" nor "the 101" in Oregon. Call them 101 or I-5 and the natives will be less hostile. Oh, don't call it or-e-GON. 126 is good, interesting, scenic. I haven't been on the others. Now that you bring it up, the OP ought to know... Oregon, Or-e-gun central coast, "central Oregon" is east of the cascades :W

RE: Roads from the 101 to the 5 in Central Oregon

I don't do 38, the others 126 & 42 are better roads IMO.
